Watercolour Amarylis for Ellie

I love books!! I spend hours in bookshops and spend far too much money in them!! I have a vast library of all kinds of art and craft books as well as fiction! Here is a very small part of the watercolour section in my bookcase in my studio! I'm constantly flipping through them for inspiration and a few months back re read one of these and followed the guidelines on how to paint Amarylis.

First I made a quick study- loose with a lot of flicked paint,

Then I painted another portrait more carefully.

I've decided to post them both for you to see, but mainly because I want to give one to Ellie, my Sister in Law! I hope these will cheer you up a little Ellie, let me know which one you like best and I will send you a print in the post! Lots of love, Caroline xx

  2. Hi Caroline. I am blown away by your beautiful amaryllis paintings. You have such a deft hand with watercolour. I love them both but I really like the loose splashy first one, although the other is gorgeous too...hmmm.

Is that a Shirley Trevena book I spot there? I share your love for art and craft books. I get the same excitement in a bookshop that other people get buying new shoes.

  3. Wow, Caroline, they are both beautiful! You are a true botanical illustrator, your paintings are right up there with Margaret Mee, one of my favorites botanical watercolor artist of all time!

If I had to choose one, I'd pick the "flicked paint" one. I just love its looseness and freshness! A wonderful gift to your sister-in-law! :-)

  10. The photo of your book collection in my sidebar had me swooping over to your blog for a closer look. I also spend far too much time and money in bookshops but what a buzz!Your Amarylis paintings are amazing. I love them both but would probably choose the loose, flicked paint version.

  13. This is gorgeous. Lucky Ellie. I wanted you to know your book arrived here yesterday. Your pages are beautiful. The texture and the color really pops. I am at a loss right now as to how to continue that color theme. It will come to me though I do believe. Cheers.

  17. Waah! Wowowow. I SOOOO wish I had your watercolor skills. They are both incredibly stunning, but I'm absolutely gaga over the looseness of the first one. I cannot believe that's just a quickie practice. Arg!
