IF - Fluid

Watercolour paints and inks on gessoed mountboard ©Caroline Soer 2010

This one gets another outing today for Illustration Friday's 'Fluid".  Sadly, the fluid is oil :(.   Originally titled 'Ripple',   I painted this as one of a trio of small paintings for IF's collaboration with Ripplesketches Blog to raise money to help the animal victims of the Deep Water Horizon Gulf Oil Spill.

    1. Thanks Eric, watercolours sparkle with the gesso underneath. Such a sad situation indeed.

  3. I remember these! And they are as stunning as ever. I can imagine these as ancient cave drawings too.

I love little hermit crabs. :)

  4. These are fantastic pieces and for a good cause too. I clicked on the ripples blog but it does not work....or maybe it is just my computer.

  5. Funny...the black ink of the shells look like embroidery floss stitches to me...could be because I was working on a small quilt tonight making embroidery stitches. Very beautiful watercolors very beautiful indeed.

    1. You know, you're right, Lynn - when I read your comment I went back and had a look! It's probably more obvious because these photos are in fact a larger than the originals which were ATC sized!

  6. I remember when you originally did these. I like the ink drawing of the critters against the watercolor texture and fluidness.

    1. The time has gone past so quickly hasn't it? I too like the contrast of the dark ink against the watercolour!

  10. These are so lovely. I also remember that fundraiser. It was a great way of raising money for such an upsetting catastrophe.

  11. This is a really cool technique. I love those rich colors and the way they really do suggest a beach. And the oil too. Really beautifully drawn hermit crabs. The top one might be my favorite because of that great hint of purple as shadow.

Geez, that whole event was so horrible and continues to be horrible for so many reasons, not the least of which is that those at fault will never be punished enough or forced to fairly compensate all those people who suffered, or to help rebuild all those populations of animals that were decimated. (Ok, going to stop now. Arrrgh! Lovely work!)

    1. Thanks Cindy - I really love using this technique. Yes, that's a little purple watercolour crayon worked in there - and it's actually more obvious here as these photos are larger than the originals!
