Illustration Friday - Instinct
I've been torn between posting this illustration or another image I'm currently working on this week. I've decided to go with this for now as I can see that the other will take me a few days to complete - it's quite detailed. Hopefully I'll be able to post it later this week. This image is actually two sketches for a woodcut I did a few years ago. I actually prefer these to the print which lost a lot of detail in the cutting process and anyway, it's too big for the scanner. I've digitally combined the two sketches into one image for this post.
Here is my cat, who instinctively knows the best place for sitting is either on 'her' portfolio, work in progress, keyboard, recipe book...... etc, etc!

Oh my goodness, that is simply gorgeous! I love the detail, and the darkness is foreboding. Gives me the chills. You've captured that stalking posture of the fox oh-so well!
ReplyDeleteAnd HA, isn't that so true about cats! Odd, but endearing.
I have one of those too! He likes knocking over my graphite pencils and the water for my watercolors! Wonderful illustration and I love the details!
ReplyDeleteVery nice, refined drawing, with lovely detail.
ReplyDeleteA very nice illo ! I love your mice too. :o)
ReplyDeletevery beautiful drawing! black and white gives mistery and beautiful textures!! poor chiken! :-)
ReplyDeleteLove the drawings Caroline. Your kitty is so adorable. Must be so great to him with you in your studio. I would love to paint him. I just LOVE tuxedo cats. They are my favourite. Oh I would love to have one, but I have allergies. I just adore cats. have a great day, Lisa
ReplyDeleteWow...these fit together so well that I'm a bit shocked they are two different sketches...I have to say I always get a bet envious when I see such work...I'm not brave enough to venture out into reversed fields...great detail and in keeping the line quality so good, especially on the wire...would love to see what you can do with scratchboard...
ReplyDeleteYou're right... I did draw your cat :) Love the blog... especially the aviary pics... wish I was closer. Ta for the book tip too, Austers adult works are heavy enough, guess he wants to get prospective readers in shape early!
ReplyDeleteAh ha! Another fox! You can never have enough fox illustrations in my opinion, and this one is great! A perfect example of 'instinct'!
ReplyDelete(Your cat is gorgeous too!)
I love this!
ReplyDeleteSo very fitting!
It appear that your cat knows where to sit to get your attention. I enjoyed looking at your work.
ReplyDeleteIncredible detail...lovely work!
ReplyDeleteYour cat is just too cute... and that's a pose worthy of a snuggle!
I like the detail of the wood with the black underlying!
ReplyDeletehi!
ReplyDeleteyour work is great!
thanks for the comment, 'Guai Guai' is the name of the cat in the painting, 'guai' means 'obedient' in chinese ;D
Oh great illo but...I have to say I think the cat has stolen the show! Of course, that's always "instintual" for a cat now isn't it?! As a fellow cat lover, you made me laugh with this one.
ReplyDeleteThat's breathtaking! Textures are everywhere and it works so well
ReplyDeleteExcellent rendering in these pieces. Would love to see the print as well.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! Did I mention I think this is gorgeous?
ReplyDeleteOh and your puddy... omg, I just want to grab her and squeeze her, she's so cute! Although I'm sure I'd probably pull back a bloody stump if I tried that, eh?
My cat's like to help me wrap presents... with their butts... all three of them at once.
Thank you everyone for such lovely comments! It's always great to hear from you!
ReplyDeleteWonderful illustration for instinct!! I missed this somehow.
ReplyDeleteYour cat is beautiful. I adore tuxedo kitties! I had one names Slick for nearly 16 years. She reminds me of him.
