I've been scraping away at oil pastels again for this week's Illustration Friday theme of 'Unbalanced. I based it on Noel Coward's song Mad Dogs and Englishmen and as he didn't mention chickens I included them too! Must admit that my illustration looks more like midnight than midday though! Click the pic above to enlarge, then click again to magnify if you want to explore!
Mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun,
The Japanese don't care to.
The Chinese wouldn't dare to,
Hindoos and Argentines sleep firmly from twelve to one.
But Englishmen detest a siesta.
In the Philippines
There are lovely screens
To protect you from the glare.
In the Malay States
There are hats like plates
Which the Britishers won't wear.
At twelve noon
The natives swoon
And no further work is done.
But mad dogs and Englishmen
Go out in the midday sun.
etc etc !!
This is a great illustration of the song. I had never really paid attention to the words other than the first line. I really like this techinque.
ReplyDeleteI like this technique as well... and all that you have fit in to a little space.. my eye wanders around... and I love the yellow cast from the sun.. great job.
ReplyDeleteLOLOL Caroline that is great! I remember when I was in Bangkok, my huband were out site seeing the wats, palace etc and it was about 12:30 pm and it was so hot!!!! I looked at him and said you know what...its a little past noon - and only mad dog and englishmen are out at this time. I tell you the next trips, I did not go out wandering at the time and opted to sit by the pool sipping a drink! lOL.....your post brought back good memories of all our travels.
