IF - Suspense

 'Suspense' ©Caroline Soer 2012

Suspense is the theme this week for Illustration Friday.  Will the little fishing boat make it safely though the storm?
Thinking about it,  I could probably have taken almost any watercolour painting for this theme as there's usually an element of suspense or tension with this medium - especially on paper that's been prepared with gesso !  The paint has a mind of its own and does all kinds of unexpected things as it runs over the slippery surface!  Certainly not a technique if you like total control over your artwork!

  1. Watercolor and gesso who knew? Love how the swirls of color bring such motion to the paper. Hoping for the safety of that little boat. It looks terrific!

  2. I love the texture when you use watercolor over gesso, but I'm still not comfortable with no control. AS for the boat? He'll make it safely through, I'm sure!

  3. I'm glad these other folks are confident about the survival of that teeny boat. I have no idea how you got such great boat-details in that tiny image but wow, so neat! I'm sure they are built to weather storms, so I shall be positive as well. ;)

  6. Whoa, the gesso and watercolors make a GREAT duo here. Looks like very turbulent winds! Makes me very, very nervous for the people on the wee boat. Hope they make it to safety!

  7. I'm guessing the boat gets to safety, but I bet everyone on board is wet :) Very cool image. I love how you handled this technique. It evokes such a mood.

  11. The movement of the wind and water is fantastic. You've captured not just the sight of wild weather but the feel and taste of it too. Unpredictably? Hahaha Caroline, that's part of your great skill!

    Have a fun week! Xoxo

  16. Interestingly, this image loaded very slowly onto my screen for some reason. I started wondering if you manipulated the load time to create such suspense! It was beautiful to see it appear slowly...lovely job.
